Surfer Content Optimization
Masterclass:A 5-Min Review

In this review, I break down what you’ll learn and why it’s ideal for content managers fresh on the job.

My first review of Surfer Content Optimization Masterclass was four years ago! 😮

Previously, the online course focused on SEO writing from a freelancer’s standpoint. It covered basic keyword research, best practices, and positioning yourself as an indispensable content writer.

Today? This brand new course explores using SEO in your growth strategy, making it ideal for marketing managers who need to learn the ropes fast.

Here are the covered modules:

Module 1: Integrating and Implementing SEO Content Optimization

Let’s start with the basics.

In the first module, Surfer walks you through how to:

  • Resolve technical issues to improve traffic and rankings

  • Align SEO with your business and marketing objectives

  • Deliver quick wins, like updating old content and optimizing for Google Discover

  • Set up your SEO team: build an in-house team or outsource to an agency/consultant

  • Measure metrics to gauge reach and impact using SEO tools like Google Search Console and Surfer

  • Scale SEO strategies, including a six-month content calendar and improving brand awareness with informational and branded keywords

🤔 VERDICT: Surfer’s masterclass is off to a great start. The first module lays the foundation to ensure your website is in top shape before you invest in SEO any further.

Module 2: The Foundations of Content Optimization

The second module’s all about what Google wants — and what you can do right now to rank well on the SERPs.

Lessons include:

  • Using AI in your content creation workflow

  • Differentiating between topical authority and topical coverage

  • Creating a topic cluster strategy to boost your authority

  • Implementing E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) in your content

  • Breaking down the four types of search intent (fail to nail this, and your content is doomed before you even publish it)

🤔 VERDICT: Surfer’s second module explores the hallmarks of excellent content.

It doesn’t go into extreme details — at least compared to the Grow and Convert course which I looooove — but it does a fairly decent job of explaining the steps to satisfy readers and attract more traffic.

Module 3: On-Page SEO Best Practices for Writers and Editors

Surfer’s own tool frequently appears in this module. 👋

Here, you’ll learn how to:

  • Optimize your content naturally

  • Update your posts to maintain ranking or improve performance

  • Humanize your AI content by using specific prompts, fact-checking, adding a unique POV, and more

🤔 VERDICT: Like its predecessor, this module is light on tactical tips.

Take the part about adding a unique PoV to humanize your AI content.

I’d love for Surfer to recommend questions or break down its process when interviewing subject matter experts. For example, what questions can we ask (or not ask) to dig deeper into the topic? What should we watch out for when planning the interview logistics?

Many content professionals will find this valuable.

Module 4: Building Beyond the Page

You’re crossing the finish line. Surfer Content Optimization Masterclass shows you how to do more of what works.

Learn how to:

  • Implement internal linking to build your website’s topical authority

  • Automate your SEO content workflow using Surfer

  • Improve your website’s technical SEO — even if you’re not a “technical” person

  • Repurpose your SEO content into multiple assets and do more of what works

🤔 VERDICT: This last module is a delight.

Mainly because it reaffirms what I believe about SEO — that it’s only one part of the growth puzzle. Your content can live and breathe just as successfully as in other channels. Whether it’s on social media, podcast, or email…

…as long as it drives action, it’s a win. 🏆

Final Exam

To earn the official certificate, you need to score 85% or higher. You can retake the test as many times as needed.

Here's mine!

What I like:

  • Challenging experience: The masterclass doesn’t show the questions you got correct and wrong. Scored 4 out of 5? Too bad, you gotta figure out which one you got wrong. 😛 IMO, this is excellent for learning retention. Surfer makes you work for it.

  • Valuable for users and non-users: Even if you don’t use Surfer as a tool, there are valuable lessons — that is, if you’re new to SEO writing!

What I think can be improved:

  • Unclear questions: This is oddly common in MCQs! I found 1-3 questions with technically multiple correct answers. Oh well.

This Surfer SEO review was a gem! I’ve been testing the tool and noticed better structure in my blogs already. Do you prefer Surfer SEO over tools like Frase or Clearscope?
